Finding the right care provider for a family member can be a daunting task. If you are not familiar with Home Health Care industry jargon, you just aren’t sure if you are comparing apples to apples or if your research is creating fruit salad!

What questions do I ask? What’s the difference between certified vs. accredited vs. licensed? How do I know if I am receiving accurate information or an evasive redirect?

The most important questions to ask before procuring

Home Health Care Services for your loved one are:

Do I know what services the Home Health Care Company provides? Does their staff and/or services include:

  • Skilled Services; licensed RNs LPNs, PT, OT, ST, or MSW.
  • Private duty care; Home Health Aide, Home Support Aide, Personal Care Aide, or C.N.A.
  • Medical Escorts
  • Personal Emergency Response Systems
  • Referrals to Home Visit Doctor Practices
  • Referrals to Hospice Care
  • Referral to Elder Care Law Attorneys
  • Initial Nursing Assessments, free of charge

Do I know what I will be paying for? 

  • What does my tradition Medical Insurance cover?
  • “I have a Medicare HMO. How does that differ from straight Medicare coverage”?
  • Are there co-pays for any services received?
  • If I have Long Term Care Insurance, what will that cover?
  • Will I be asked to sign a contract?
  • What are the “Out of Pocket Expenses?”
  • What kind of training have personal care aides received?

Do I know the company’s mission?

Do I know who to contact in case of an emergency?

  • Who do I contact after Business hours?
  • How do I reach the nurse?
  • What is the company’s policy for call back times, if I have to leave a voicemail message?

How long has this company been providing care in my area?

Is this company part of a Certified Home Health Agency, a Personal Care Agency, or a non-medical Agency? Is it a Registry, potentially exposing you to tremendous legal liabilities as an employer. You won’t be able to tell by the name alone. You need to ask.

  • Are caregivers employees of the agency or are they Independent Contractors?
  • Has the company provided Worker’s Compensation Insurance for their aides?

Call to ask why this is so important!

  • Do employees have a criminal background screening? Don’t be fooled. Agencies cannot do a criminal background screening if the aides are not employees of the company!
  • Are the caregivers supervised by licensed RNs?
